3-1…USA wins final World Cup warmup game vs. Australia

June 5, 2010

The US Soccer team got a very nice win Saturday in South Africa.

The W came courtesy of two goals by Edson Buddle (4th & 31st minutes) and one by Herculez Gomez (90th minute extra time) en route to a 3-1 victory over World Cup Group D’s Australia. Though the match was considered a warm-up “friendly,” it was anything but cordial. Tempers flared in the first half and several fights nearly erupted during the 2nd half. That news makes me very happy. Only tough teams move on in World Cup play. Fight if you have to. Do what it takes to get it done.

So I don’t care how the game went down, or whether or not people say this was merely a victory against Australia’s b-team. This win was a necessary confidence booster going into the United States’ first official game versus England next Saturday (2:00pm est).

Today’s outcome reminded us here in America that we win games in South Africa, something we learned very well in last year’s Confederations Cup. So why not keep winning? Keep winning and keep fighting. Nice job today.
